But the Feb. 8 "Idol" episode -- the first edition of Hollywood Week -- did beat out "The Voice" in total viewers with 18.9 million.<br /><br />But "The Voice" is closing the gap. Last week, "Idol" had a 6.0 rating in the demo and 18.5 million viewers.<br /><br />In terms of total viewers in the key 18-49 demographic, 7.7 million viewers tuned into "Idol," while "The Voice" had 8.5 million viewers.<br /><br />The battle between the two reality series has been brewing since "The Voice" entered the scene in 2011. Earlier this week, "Idol" executive producer Nigel Lythgoe told The Hollywood Reporter that though the competitive NBC series has a "fun format," "they need stronger talent -- we'll see.<br /><br />It was that same argument that "Idol" stars and crew used at the Television Critics Association press tour in January to bash "The Voice." According to TVGuide.com, Longtime "Idol" judge Randy Jackson said:<blockquote style="color: rgb(153, 153, 153);">"'Idol' is still the best TV show that's come on anywhere ... We're the original. We kind of invented this whole game that everybody's now copying -- and I say that they're copying it, right? ... The winner of 'The Voice,' I will remind you, [Javier Colon] was an artist who had a deal at Capitol Records for several years, a failed contract … That show was almost 'second chance people.'"</blockquote>Adam Levine, "The Voice's" judge-coach who helped lead Colon to victory fired back on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" early in February via EW.com:<blockquote style="color: rgb(153, 153, 153);">"Shame on Randy Jackson for saying that. Because he of anybody should know that if you're in this business, you need second, third, fourth and fifth chances. And so we love and embrace having that being part of the show ... You have to rethink things even more than we were a couple of weeks ago… ’cause now it’s war.”<br /><br />Simon added, “I really am up for that. I think it’s crazy, but if that’s what they want to do, then we have to be better.”<br /><br />The wildly successful TV mogul, who has to fill two judges’ seats and find a host for next season’s “X Factor,” observed, “You know what’s interesting? When everyone talks about artists competing, it’s like suddenly this massive punch-up between all these competition shows. So it’s really, really, really competitive… in a way that’s more exciting than anything else at the moment, and I kind of feel like the underdog, so I like it.”<br /><br />Cowell, not fazed by Grammy-winning musical artists serving as judges on “The Voice,” said, “I would ask how many hit records have they made… how many artists have they discovered (referring to the show itself). That’s where we have to be different on our judging panel. It’s very important that you have people on the panel who have actually signed and made artists successful all over the world, not just have had hits yourself. That’s why you have a judging panel. I was kind of surprised at that.”<br /><br />Cowell is also surprised that he doesn’t get credit for the innovation of using mentors in talent shows, and he set the record straight. “Everyone thinks that ‘The Voice’ started this whole mentoring thing. It’s complete nonsense. Our [UK] show was on years before then and we were always different from other shows because our judges were mentors. Then they come out before us in America and they have mentors. But that was copied from us.”<br /><br />With “X Factor,” “American Idol” and “The Voice” all up against each other, Cowell clarified his recent “X Factor” “bloodbath” comments, and said, “I was slightly misquoted when I said there was going to be a bloodbath. I wasn’t actually referring to the ‘X Factor’ having a bloodbath. I said, ‘The whole market will be a bloodbath because everyone wants to be in this market now’ and certain people are going to suffer because of it. You have to make sure you’re not one of the ones that’s going to suffer and the only way around this is — and I’ve been in this business for many, many [years]. But NBC insiders said the network was "considering" airing "The Voice" then.<br /><br />One insider said NBC hopes to bring back the entire judges' panel -- Aguilera, Adam Levine, Cee Lo Green and Blake Shelton.<br /><br />"We're really pleased with the entire cast," the person said. "You look at [the] ratings and it's no accident."<br /><br />The show was a breakout hit for NBC in April when it hurried it to air and got the jump on the debut of Fox's fall singing show, "X Factor." NBC considered airing the current, second season of "The Voice" at the start of the 2011-12 season, but decided the turnaround time would be too fast.<br /><br />"The Voice" has become NBC's highest-rated show besides NFL broadcasts.<br /><br />In its season two premiere Sunday, following the Super Bowl, it earned NBC's strongest ratings for an entertainment show in six years. Monday's episode earned the network's best ratings in its timeslot in nearly eight years, excluding the Olympics.<br /><br />In its first season,"X Factor" scored a 4.3 rating/12 share in the advertiser-sought 18-49 demographic and averaged 12.6 million total viewers, compared to an 8.5/23 and 25.2 million for "Idol" last year.<br /><br />After just two episodes, "The Voice" actually has higher average ratings than "Idol" this season -- but its ratings are severely skewed by its post-Super Bowl premiere. The shows combined for easily the net's top non-sports scores this season.<br /><br />It will take a while to see where both shows settle, but NBC has to be pleased with the launch of "Smash," which averaged a 3.8 rating/10 share in adults 18-49 and 11.5 million viewers overall, according to affiliate-based preliminary estimates from Nielsen. Though it fell off in its second half-hour as expected (from 4.2 to 3.4 in 18-49), "Smash" led its hour over competing dramas "Hawaii Five-0" on CBS (2.7/7 in 18-49, 9.8 million viewers overall) and "Castle" on ABC (2.0/5 in 18-49, 8.7 million viewers overall).<br /><br />"Smash" generated perhaps the best reviews of any drama this season. Tony Lucca had starred on Disney Channel’s The Mickey Mouse Club in the early-90s along with coach Christina Aguilera. And, he had a lot of time to worry about how the reunion would all play out.<br /><br />“The reunion was bizarre in a lot of ways,” Tony tells reporters during a press call on Monday. “Obviously, the producers and I agreed that was an interesting piece of the story, so we covered a lot of ground in that leading up to the audition. I certainly pulled my hair… What would be the best approach?”<br /><br />The married father of one son admits he was always gunning for Adam Levine as his coach, but fretted whether Christina would feel snubbed when he went with the Maroon 5 frontman. Or if he did join his old cast mate’s team, would it be strange or inappropriate down the line when she had to pick between him and another performer?<br /><br />“The fact that it didn't dawn on her who I was until after the blind audition certainly made that a little easier,” the 35-year-old singer-songwriter says. The cameras captured Christina’s jaw drop as her chair turned away from the stage and she recognized Tony. She then got up quickly to find him backstage.<br /><br />“The way she came in and went down memory lane that was extremely flattering, to say the least,” he says. “It was really cool, because it certainly wasn't solicited or prodded out of her. Her sentiments were very genuine and honest and it was legitimately cool to reconnect. Everything's going to be a little bizarre in front of a camera, but I couldn't have been happier with the way it went down and I'm just really grateful for her to have been so gracious and flattering.”<br /><br />There’s a four-year age difference between the singer and the 31-year-old coach, which may not mean a lot now, but Tony says that Christina, Britney Spears, and Justin Timberlake were part of the younger members of the series’ cast and often played the “little siblings.” Tony further addressed the age gap when reporters asked about Christina’s admission that Britney had a crush on him back in the day.<br /><br /><iframe width="400" height="255" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/w7d4jozgBL4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe><center>[<a href="http://youtu.be/w7d4jozgBL4">SMART-PHONE FRIENDLY</a>]</center><br />“They kind of looked up to us and found out where we did all our shopping,” Tony recalls. “They'd go out and buy some of our clothes… I was dating Keri Russell at the time and I know that Britney and Christina just thought the world of her and looked up to her. Maybe, in that light it would be apparent that there was a crush or something. But no, not like something that was ever acted upon or initiated or anything like that at all. It was much more like a little sister-type thing. My wife got the biggest kick out of that.”<br /><br />After Disney Channel canceled The Mickey Mouse Club in 1994, Tony moved to Los Angeles to act. What took me so long? I don't know. I guess I felt like my plate was already heaped with televised singing, since I also recap "Glee," "American Idol," "The X Factor" and "America's Got Talent" for Show Tracker.<br /><br />But I had no idea what I was missing until tuning in after the Super Bowl for Sunday night's Season 2 premiere (Part 2 of the premiere airs Monday night). Now that I've hit my button and turned my thronelike chair around to behold its parade of talent and entertaining judge interplay (The judges have to compete for the contestants' affection, just as the contestants have to compete for theirs? Genius!), well, I'm standing up and applauding, maybe reaching over and hitting another judge's button. ... You get the idea. I'm pleased to be tasked with recapping it for you this season. We're gonna have fun.<br /><br />So five singers were picked by the judge/mentors on Sunday night's show. We also saw a few who sadly failed to spin a single throne. (Poor Daniel Rosa!)<br /><br />Here's who got the nod on Sunday: <blockquote><p>RaeLynn: <span style="color:#999999;">This 17-year-old, blond-locked country singer and Texas farm girl (sporting a whopping red flower that matched her smudgy red lipstick) sang Miranda Lambert's "Hell on Heels," a risky move given that judge Blake Shelton is married to Lambert. But ("Thank you, Jesus"?) the risk paid off: Both Adam Levine and Shelton hit their buttons to spin their "I Want You" thrones. And after they faced RaeLynn, they faced off with each other. Shelton coughed that he could make RaeLynn a country star. Levine, who mentored last year's winning contestant, Javier Colon, countered, "Why would you want to be just a country star? Wouldn't you want to be even bigger than that?" Yeah, not a winning tack. RaeLynn opts to be mentored by the husband of her "inspiration," Shelton.</span><br /><br />Jesse Campbell: <span style="color:#999999;">This 42-year-old single dad, whose wife left him with their young daughter after his musical career failed to take off, managed to get back on his feet after a stint living without a home, sleeping in his car with his daughter on his chest. He's now getting by as a church and wedding singer, and his vocal prowess on "A Song for You" captured the attention and interest of all four judges. Ultimately, it seemed to come down to Cee Lo Green and Christina Aguilera, who tangled like little devils over who would get Campbell's soul. "From the moment you opened up your mouth, I said that's my man. That's my brother," Green said. "I was feeling the soul too, even though I'm not, you know, the same color as Cee Lo," Aguilera said. "Hey, Christina," countered Green. "Everybody's the same color with the lights off." Campbell went with Aguilera. "You said you would fight for me, and I'm ready to fight," he said.</span><br /><br />Juliet Simms: <span style="color:#999999;">This 25-year-old, raspy-voiced rocker from Florida spins Levine, Green and, eventually, Aguilera with her down-on-her-knees take on "Oh! Darling." After Levine and Aguilera spar and Green dismisses what he deems to be their "sexual tension," Green introduces his own element of sexual tension. "Baby, I am so thoroughly impressed and in awe of you. You turn me on," Green growls. "Your voice is amazing. I heard the story of myself and my life in that performance. You look great. I love your style. I love your energy. Oh, my God." Simms picks Cee Lo.</span><br /><br />Chris Mann: <span style="color:#999999;">This suit-wearing, blue-eyed, 29-year-old Kansan, who studied opera at Vanderbilt University, explains that he's pursuing his music career backed by his mom, who's struggling with pancreatic cancer -- the same disease that killed Steve Jobs. Then he goes out there and sings Andrea Bocelli's "Because We Believe," prompting first Green, then Aguilera, to turn around. Green asked him why he chose that song. "It's been hard for me. I've been at it for a while," Mann said. "And I've tried to shrink my voice down to fit. But I decided for this show, I was going to just sing like myself." Green told him his team was the one to choose "If you want to be yourself." But Aguilera said, "I know what to do with real vocalists." Mann went with Aguilera.</span><br /><br />Tony Lucca: <span style="color:#999999;">This former Mouseketeer may have shared the TV screen with Aguilera during their youth, but she doesn't seem to share too many of his fond memories (or any memories, really). Lucca explains that while a lot of his Mickey Mouse Club cohort pursued pop stardom, he traveled the country singing in clubs. Now he's got a pretty wife and cute son and another shot at big-time fame. His take on Ray LaMontagne's "Trouble" prompts first Levine, then Aguilera (who doesn't seem to recognize her old cast mate), then Shelton to hit their buttons. Green's back remains to Lucca until Levine hops up and presses Green's button too. Levine heaps praise on Lucca (whose name Aguilera fails to recognize as well), and everyone else seems to be hanging back a bit to let Levine make his plea. "For the record, I pushed two buttons. Which is the first time in the history of 'The Voice.' That's never happened before. Please, please, for the love of God, pick me." Lucca does pick Levine. And the spin back around in the chair (or perhaps a voice in her earpiece) seems to shake some Mouseketeer memory loose under Aguilera's mass of hair. She schleps backstage to congratulate Lucca -- and rewards him for his patience by telling him Britney Spears had a crush on him. But, that didn’t stop NBC from creating a commercial worthy of the big game.<br /><br />Blake Shelton previewed a snippet of the singing competition's high-flying martial arts-laden Super Bowl commercial on Thursday night’s The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.<br /><br />"Christina Aguilera beats the crap out of me in this commercial,” Shelton said of the commercial titled “Vokal Kombat.” “And there's fighting and it's karate and it's awesome."<br /><br />Directed by Friday Night Lights and Battleship director Peter Berg, the commercial is a heightened version of what the coaches engage in during the singing competition: Fighting it out until one of their team members is crowned the winner. always declare it "heartbreaking" to choose the winner of a vocal battle, no matter how easy the decision actually is; and most importantly, never, ever interrupt Christina Aguilera when she is speaking.<br /><br />One late afternoon in a quiet backroom of a Los Angeles photo studio, Aguilera is curled up, barefoot, on a white couch next to fellow coaches Adam Levine and Blake Shelton. She's sipping an iced coffee and holding forth on the greatness of the team of singers she's assembled for The Voice's second season, which begins February 5th in a prime post-Super Bowl slot: "In one of my battles," she says, "this girl and guy are doing Nirvana's 'Heart-Shaped Box,' and I'm not sure if people would even expect that from me..."<br /><br />At that, Cee Lo Green – who's been splayed diagonally in a leather chair off to the side, in deep communion with the ceiling – snaps to attention and begins singing Kurt Cobain's melody in his high voice: "Hey, wait/I've got a new complaint..."<br /><br />Aguilera flares up like a sexy puffer fish, swiveling her bleach-blond head in his direction, red lips pursed, blue eyes blazing with imperial annoyance. "Yes, Cee Lo," she says, as if she's talking to her four-year-old son. "This is my floor here!" He stops singing, and Aguilera laughs, already over it: "You wake him up and now he's interrupting everybody's ****!"<br /><br />The unlikely stars of The Voice – last season's highest-rated NBC entertainment show – have a surprisingly warm off-camera rapport for four people who have no real business being in a room together. "Just look at the four of us," says Levine. "It's just so wrong and so amazing."<br /><br />As widespread gossip would have it, the other three supposedly resent Aguilera for various alleged sins, including tardiness, imperiousness and earning more money than them – but there's not much evidence of that today. "'Supposedly' is the key word," Aguilera says, with a big laugh. Levine and Shelton just attended Aguilera's 31st birthday party at a Hollywood bowling alley; Cee Lo skipped it only because he was out of town.<br /><br />They spend a lot of time teasing one another. Oklahoma native Shelton – a singer with 10 Number One country hits to his name but little recognition outside his genre before The Voice debuted last April – is a frequent target of hick jokes. Shelton, 35, has been on an Eighties kick lately, so he plays Young MC's "Bust a Move" on his iPhone's tinny speakers. Says Levine, "Blake thinks this song came out two weeks ago." But they're also jealous of his cowboy cool: "Blake can say anything or do anything," Levine adds. "If I was like, 'I'm drunk at 4:00!' I'd be attacked. He's like, 'It's cool, **** you, I just shot a ****ing moose, kiss my ass!' He can say whatever he wants."<br /><br />Cee Lo, 37, is the designated oddball, the ruler and sole inhabitant of what Shelton calls "Cee Lo Land." At the moment, he's wearing a black tank top and long black shorts, plus sandals over white socks. "He can wear white socks with sandals and still have it be ****ing cool," says Levine. "If I did that, Blake would make fun of me."<br /><br />If Aguilera occasionally has to go full diva, on-camera or off-, she sees it as the only way to hold her own. "You have to be a pretty strong girl to stay up in the mix with the guys," she says. "It's a lot. It's a crazy locker-room kind of situation."<br /><br />Levine, his tattooed, yoga-toned arms exposed by a sleeveless shirt, turns to Aguilera. "I honestly just recently started realizing that you're surrounded by three dudes all the time, and that has to be something of a pain in the ass," he says. So they’ve figured they have an opportunity to fix it.<br /><br />"They expected Paula to be the goofy girl, and Nicole to be the pretty one. But Paula was so bad that it made none of it work."<br /><br />A Fox spokesman confirmed the departures of Scherzinger and Jones, but could not immediately confirm Abdul's departure.<br /><br />Part of the issue, the insider said, was that Fox chose to spend its money on an elaborate set and glitzy production values for the live show. By contrast, NBC's "The Voice" spent its budget on hiring top-shelf talent, including Christina Aguilera and Blake Shelton.<br /><br />Aguilera is said to be receiving upwards of $10 million per season for "The Voice." One insider told TheWrap that Abdul was receiving only $1 million for a season of "The X Factor."<br /><br />Jones confirmed his exit on Twitter.<br /><br />Scherzinger, the lead singer of The Pussycat Dolls, replaced original "X Factor" judge Cheryl Cole, who was dismissed from the show in May 2011.<br /><br />The show has scored admirable ratings, but hasn't lived up to creator Cowell's expectations. He said last summer he hoped it would top "American Idol" as the country's top-rated show, but it failed to climb from the roughly 12.49 million viewers who watched its September launch. Indeed, "X Factor" earned only half of his former show's ratings in its first season, which wrapped in December.<br /><br />The show stirred buzz for certain episodes -- most notably the Dec. 8 live results show when teen contender Rachel Crow unexpectedly got the boot -- but "X Factor" viewership fell to as few as 8.51 million.<br /><br />Scherzinger was knocked for indecisiveness, especially when she refused to make a crucial ruling on which of two contenders should go home. Abdul was largely a peacemaker this go-round, and had few of the sparks she displayed with Cowell on "American Idol." Instead, Cowell feuded with new judge L.A. Reid.<br /><br />"X Factor" has averaged a 4.2/12 rating among Adults 18-49 and 12.4 million total viewers last season, close to the ratings of NBC's new singing competition, "The Voice."<br /><br />"The Voice" returns to the airwaves on Feb. 6. The two posed together for a photo spread in the July issue of InStyle, which matched up singers with their musical mentors.<br /><br />The pairings include Mary J. Blige with Chaka Khan, John Legend with Quincy Jones, Fergie with Rita Marley, and Faith Hill with Aretha Franklin. But Aguilera's coupling with James nearly brought the singer to tears because James seemed to idolize her too.<blockquote style="color: rgb(153, 153, 153);">"Etta is my all-time favorite singer," Aguilera explained. "I've said it for the last seven years — since I had my first debut record out — in every interview, in every story, in every on- and off-camera question. I mean, all of Etta's old songs, countless songs I could name, I grew up listening to. That music was always such a huge escape for me, even from a young age."</blockquote>When she was about 7 years old, Aguilera's grandmother used to take her to look for vintage records, which was how she got introduced to soul, jazz and blues. "There was such soul, emotion and raw heart in it," Aguilera said. "So much real heart and emotion that's lacking in music today. You used to have to sing and convey emotion, and now, well, technically you can do anything with technology. It sucks for music today, but that's why that old music feels so good to me." Aguilera said she was a "bundle of nerves" before meeting James. Little did she know, James had already been won over.<blockquote><span style="color: rgb(153, 153, 153);">"When I first heard her stuff, and I heard her say on TV, [in response to the question] where she got her style, 'I grew up on Etta James,' that made me feel so good," James said. "The last person who said that was Janis Joplin, but Christina can sing. Janis was good, but there's a difference in the quality of voice. I couldn't believe that big sound, that big voice was coming out of her. Tell me who you've seen that sings like her, because we don't have anybody. "You don't look exactly like them, but there's something about you that's like Dinah Washington, Billie Holiday, those kinds of chicks. I've never seen a girl sing as tough as you sing, as little as you are. And this weekend, Christina Aguilera delivered with her version of "At Last" during Etta's funeral.<br /><br />The clip begins with Christina offering a heartfelt confession about the impact Etta left on Aguilera's own musical career. Then, the Grammy winner closes her eyes and begins belting out the opening notes to one of the most stunning renditions of "At Last" we've ever heard. <div><br /></div><div>She channels her inner Etta and embraces a raspy, raw expression, closely resembling the intensity of the original. Other celebrities present at the sad occasion were Christina Aguilera and Stevie Wonder, both who performed.<br /><br />It was a somber event, and Etta is clearly going to be missed by all. But it was Aguilera's moving performance of "At Last", which she actually regularly includes in her concerts, that stole the show. <a href="http://www.aguileraonline.com/2012/01/video-etta-james-funeral-at-last.html">Check out the video</a>.<br /><br />It can't be easy to perform one of your idol's most well-known songs at her funeral, but Christina nailed it, singing with love, grace, and respect. Aguilera poured all of her heart and soul into the performance to pay tribute to a woman she called "her idol."<br /><br />Christina was dressed in a black suit and had her hair pulled into a sweeping up-do as she bravely stood before James' family and close friends and said, <div style="text-align: justify; color: rgb(153, 153, 153);"><blockquote>"Out of all the singers that I've ever heard, she was the one that cut right to my soul and spoke to me."</blockquote></div> It was clearly an emotional experience for Aguilera and it appeared that she had tears in her eyes as she began to sing.<br /><br />She brought the crowd to their feet as she finished the song belting out notes that are impossible for most of today's stars. She has always been a fan of Etta's, she even sang the Etta James' song "A Sunday Kind of Love" on Star Search in 1990. That performance earned her second place on the popular televised talent show.<br /><br />As much as Christina loved Etta, Etta seemed to love her too. Back in 2006, Etta had this to say about Christina, <blockquote style="color: rgb(153, 153, 153);">"When I first heard her stuff, and I heard her say on TV, [in response to the question] where she got her style, 'I grew up on Etta James,' that made me feel so good. The last person who said that was Janis Joplin, but Christina can sing. Janis was good, but there's a difference in the quality of voice. I couldn't believe that big sound, that big voice was coming out of her. Tell me who you've seen that sings like her, because we don't have anybody."</blockquote>Then to Aguilera she said, <blockquote style="color: rgb(153, 153, 153);">"It's like you were here many years ago. (Beyonce also played James in the 2008 movie “Cadillac Records.”) The song was written in 1941 and James popularized it in the early 1960s.<blockquote style="color: rgb(153, 153, 153);">“There’s a line in this song that says ‘I found a dream that I could speak to,’” Aguilera said before she began to sing. “And for me that dream, all my life, has been Etta James.”</blockquote>Aguilera delivered a full-throated rendition, with minimal accompaniment. Her vocal swoops and growls drew appreciative cheers and whistles from the funeral goers.<br /><br />Aguilera’s singing often spurs debate. Last year, her live version of “The Star-Spangled Banner” was roasted by some commentators when, caught up in the passion of the song, she fumbled a few lines.
