The backlash on Xtina was so massive at the time that i dont think it got the love it deserved.<br /><br />It featured Nicki Minaj who was just bubbling at the time. I would be willing to bet that if it had been Nicki’s song featuring Xtina it would’ve gotten the attention it deserved.<br /><br />It's a perverted lil' song that's right in line with what’s being said on radio from everyone else right now. I guess thats what happens when you put me, Ester, and Christina in a room. Her artistry scrapped the gut-bucket of pain and led the way for women who didn't mind getting rugged onstage. Before Aretha Franklin and Tina Turner, there was the megapower of soul: Etta James.<br /><br />Born Jamesetta Hawkins on January 25, 1938, in the South-Central area of Los Angeles, Etta was the first "bad girl" of R&amp;B. She famously performed with Ace bandages on her arms to cover up track marks from a severe heroin addiction, her rap sheet was as long as Lindsay Lohan's, and she hung tough with drag queens as a teen. One of her many arrests was with a handful of queens at an Indianapolis hotel for being unmarried and sharing a room with a member of the opposite sex. In an era when women had to be prim and proper, she bucked authority and was apologetically Etta.<br /><br />Etta said in her 2003 autobiography, Rage to Survive, <blockquote>"I'm serious about turning little churchgoing Jamesetta into a tough bitch called Etta James."</blockquote> She was as tough as the blues and had the warrior marks to prove it. However, after a long battle with cancer, Etta James died today at the age of 73.<br /><br />Also known as Miss Peaches, she had her first number 1 R&amp;B hit at the age of 14 in 1954 as the lead singer of a trio called the Peaches. But it was her 1960 solo deal under Chess Records that would make James a household name. Songs like "All I Could Do is Cry” and "A Sunday Kind of Love" ruled the airwaves. And then the classic that would change her life forever: 1961's "At Last" from the album At Last! Written by Mack Gordon and Harry Warren and performed by Glenn Miller in 1941, the song gave Etta her signature hit.<br /><br />Even with all of her success, James was wildly exploited by her record label, not receiving the money she earned. Soon after, Etta’s addictions got the best of her. In 2006 she told Gay City News that Billie Holiday had personally warned her to "not to get caught up staying up late and drinking and partying." Etta didn't heed the warning. By the age of 21, Etta developed a full-blown addiction to heroin.<br /><br />For decades, Etta struggled with heroin, overdosing many times and nearly losing the battle like her idol, Holiday. In 1974 she faced the possibility of nearly 10 years in prison for heroin possession and forgery. Luckily, she was sentenced to 17 months of drug rehab. But Etta would relapse several times. She didn’t officially kick the habit until the age of 50 in 1988.<br /><br />In later years Etta’s career would get a revival mainly due to Christina Aguilera famously covering “At Last” and consistently crediting James. The “Beautiful” songstress told InStyle in 2006,<a href="http://i41.tinypic.com/23ro13m.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 377px; height: 567px;" src="http://i41.tinypic.com/23ro13m.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a> <blockquote>[Photo Credits: MerlitoDesigns]<br /><br />"Etta is my all-time favorite singer. I've said it for the last seven years — since I had my first debut record out — in every interview. I mean, all of Etta's old songs, countless songs I could name, I grew up listening to."</blockquote>In 2009, Etta was thrown into the biggest controversy of her career with another pop diva. At the first inaugural ball for President Obama on January 20, Beyoncé Knowles sang “At Last” — a song she had recently recorded after playing Etta James in the movie Cadillac Records. Eight days later, Miss Peaches told a Seattle audience that she "can't stand Beyoncé" and that the diva would “get her ass whipped” for singing “At Last” to the president. Etta’s son later said the outburst was due to a "drug-induced dementia.” Regardless of the media firestorm, she was clearly joking and just being Etta James. From the start of her career, Etta bucked charm school, never aiming for perfection. She was a down-home woman who endured the horrors of sexism, racism, and heartbreak that a pop star like Beyoncé will thankfully never experience. So if Etta said she wants to whip someone's ass, so be it — she is a diva who earned it!<br /><br />Through all of Etta's tragedies, she survived rock and roll, unlike the cursed 27 club (Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse, etc.). Her life was colored with the deepest of blues, but she was no casualty. Mama pulled herself up by her garter belt, dusted off her wig, and rightfully became known as one of the greatest voices of all time. While many remember Etta for “At Last,” her greatest song is arguably “I’d Rather Go Blind,” which she wrote back in 1968: <blockquote>"I looked down in the glass / That I held to my lips / And I saw the reflection of the tears rolling down my face / That's when I knew loved you / I can't live without you / I'd rather be a blind girl."</blockquote> If that isn’t the blues personified, then I don’t know what is.<br /><br />If anyone crushes your heart and all you could do is cry, you better put on some Etta James because mama will make it better. "Too much is at stake -– please vote NO on PIPA and SOPA."<br /><br />The search engine frequently delights users by toying with its homepage logo, but on Wednesday it did something it had never done before: it blocked out its logo completely.<br /><br />A link below the blackout read "Tell Congress: Please don't censor the web!" and lead to a page with the petition.<br /><br />Of course, Google's anti-SOPA and PIPA petition is not the only one out there on this day of mass online protest. Maybe because Max was here last year with Mom and Matt on Valentine’s Day and couldn’t get those slow, tiny boats out of his head.<br /><br />On Tuesday, Christina &amp; Co. took Max and his crew to the Fun Town Police and Fire Academy, riding the pump-action fire truck, headed over to Miniland Las Vegas – you knew that was gonna happen – rode Treasure Falls and the Flight Squadron, and took a spin on the Volvo Driving School Track, among other things. Afterward, they made a stop at Fun Town Market for dinner, where Max opened his presents and finally got a look at his birthday cake before blowing out the (presumably) five candles.<br /><br />A tough act to follow, right? Maybe not, Christina and Matt made their way down to the Hard Rock Hotel in San Diego afterward, where a paparazzo snapped Christina in her little black dress by with her beau in the foyer. I love my body, my son is healthy and happy and that is all that matters. Women, we are definitely under a microscope and under massive scrutiny. As long as I am happy in my own skin, that is all the confirmation I need."<br /><br />Oh and the pro-body image, girl-power rah rah rah didn't stop there. The 31-year-old went on to say, "You have got to be a strong, powerful, very confident woman," during a press event for the The Voice this weekend.<br /><br />But you've got to admit, Aguilera does have a point. Being a female in the music industry does call for a lot of confidence and a 'take no crap' attitude. But it also calls for a pretty face and a trim waist. So having such confidence emit straight from their body image, well, that right there will get them further than most other females. No not only because those others are stuck in backstage bathrooms all hopped-up on laxatives. Chances are that body image-centered confidence will strengthen their voice behind the scenes, because after all, with the eyes not so distracted the ears can actually listen to their talent.<br /><br />"Being in a position to coach these young women, I am happy to be able to share that with them and share my highs and lows," she said, also recognizing what the position is doing for her. I felt a little like the black sheep," Shelton admitted to Redbook. "It wasn't until… about three days into production, when it was just the four of us sitting down together, that we clicked."<br /><br />He added of his relationship with Aguilera, Green and Levine: "[The Voice] forced us to move out of our comfort zones. All of a sudden I was having conversations with people I had only read about in tabloids, and they're just normal people. And they know who I am, and that I [was] getting married to Miranda [Lambert], and they know who she is. The 31-year-old pop star is standing up to harsh critics and bullies who have scrutinized her recent weight gain and labeled her as "fat."<br /><br />Aguilera was heavily criticized for showing off a noticeably curvier figure at Michael Jackson's tribute concert back in October, and has been targeted by the newly svelte E! 'Fashion Police' host Kelly Osbourne on multiple occasions.<br /><br />Aguilera addressed the issue at a press conference for 'The Voice' on Friday (Jan. 6), saying, "I've been in this [business] for a long time. I came out on the scene when I was 17 years old. You can never be too much of anything. You can never be too perfect, too thin, too curvy, voluptuous, this, that. I've been on all sides of the spectrum as far as any female in this business."<br /><br />The reality TV judge continued, "As long as I'm happy in my own skin, that's all I need. I'm happy with where I'm at. I have a boyfriend that loves my body. I love my body." Aguilera is currently dating production assistant Matthew Rutler.<br /><br />Xtina even cited her notoriously racy music videos in a bid to prove her point. "I think my video works over the years have spoken to that ... As you know, 'Dirrty' and so on, and 'Lady Marmalade'. I've been no stranger to being very comfortable in my own skin to take those risks, to take those chances."<br /><br />The superstar also revealed how motherhood has helped put things into perspective. But, they also touched on something that makes them especially different: The fact that they don't even air the bad auditions.<br /><br />"The idea of finding people who couldn’t sing and making a mockery of someone" isn't the show's style, executive producer Mark Burnett says and the show's stars firmly back him up on that.<br /><br />“We all told them we’re not signing up for this show if it’s about ridiculing someone or mocking talent,” said Christina Aguilera, in a thinly veiled swipe at Fox’s American Idol and X Factor.<br /><br />“Essentially this show is about artist development,” added Cee Lo Green.<br /><br />And Adam Levine explains that the talent level definitely makes the critiques different, as well. There's a difference between being critical and just willfully mean. The talent level, especially this year is pretty high that you can be honest and say, 'This isn’t your best' rather than they suck."<br /><br />At the same time, Burnett knows that fans have been trained by its competition to expect the conflict that bad talent and judges' comments bring to a show such as this one. He says that's replaced on The Voice with the idea of superstar judges begging unknowns to join their teams and competing against each other throughout the competition.<br /><br />The Voice has become a bright spot for basement-dwelling NBC. And the network will bow the second season of the show Feb. 5 after NBC’s telecast of the Super Bowl, giving The Voice a monster lead-in that will expose the show to millions of potential new fans and likely juice the show’s season tune-in average for the entire season.<br /><br />Still, executive producer Mark Burnett declined to speculate on the show’s sophomore season ratings predictions. “I’ve had shows that have done phenomenally well and shows that haven’t done well. I’m not that good at predictions.”<br /><br />Asked if he learned anything from Simon Cowell’s overblown ratings forecast for the premiere of The X Factor, Burnett bluntly replied: “I’m hoping the lesson learned there is say less about your big predictions. It's colorful group of coaches that are not afraid to speak their minds.<br /><br />Not only did Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton talk about season two's big talent, they made a big statement about the current (bleak) condition of the record industry and how The Voice fits into the big picture…<br /><br />The whole panel today at the Television Critics Association Press Tour agreed that right now, record companies are focusing too much on an artist's "package," and not just their talent. "[The Voice] really gives artists that aren't so mainstream or commercially approachable [a chance]," says Aguilera. "It's about taking it back to the real heart of music. We all are [drawn to packages]. But then again there's that raw talent that draws you in."<br /><br />"I trust the show more than I trust the record industry at this point," echoed Levine. "I'm really passionate about this show being a new avenue [for new artists]."<br /><br />As for season two, the gang really stressed how many different genres will be represented this time around. "This year is so versatile. You have so many different kinds of genres," Aguilera says. At first she remained coy on a certain type of genre on her team, but eventually it got out that a rapper is being featured this season.<br /><br />And since it's not TCA without someone asking questions not related to the show the panel is representing, Green's lyric change to John Lennon's "Imagine" on New Year's Eve was brought up. "It was all done out of love and peace and unity and tolerance," he said. "I believe [in] speaking out and being yourself. I'm pro choice. I'm pro-expression. That's just me. I meant no harm and no disrespect."<br /><br />Finally, critics were also quick to point out that last season's contestants debut albums barely registered on the charts. In response, Levine said: "We can't control everything that happens in the record industry. You got to set it free at a certain point. You can't be there for every step of the way. I would like to see people be as successful as possible."<br /><br />Host Carson Daly added: "Those albums are arguably better than those in the top 50, so it's all perspective. I came out on the scene when I was 17 years old. ‘You can never be too much of anything. You can never be too prefect, too thin, too curvy, too voluptuous,’ this, that. I’ve been on all sides of the spectrum.. [Every] female in this business at one time or another has had criticism… and I’m always a risk taker too,” Christina said on Friday during NBC’s “The Voice” panel at the Television Critics Association Winter Session in Pasadena.<br /><br />“I’m very confident in my body,” the singer continued. “I think my video works over the years have spoken to that… I’ve been no stranger to being very comfortable in my own skin,” she added.<br /><br />Christina said despite the “massive scrutiny,” she’s happy and her boyfriend, Matthew Rutler, loves her curves.<br /><br />“As long as I’m happy in my own skin, that’s all I need, that’s all the confirmation I need. I’m happy where I am, I have a boyfriend love that loves my body, I love my body, my son is healthy and happy. That’s all that matters,” she said.<br /><br />The blonde said she also enjoys mentoring her “Voice” female team members, sharing her own experiences with body image and style criticisms.<br /><br />“Being in a position to coach these young girls, is really a great thing for me to be able to share that with them, and also sharing my highs and lows along the way. I’m very open on the show about all of that,” she said.<br /><br />In related “The Voice” news, show host and producer Carson Daly noted that when the show does return, it will feature a more unique crop of contestants than seen previously.<br /><br />“Season 1 hit the air and people aspiring to be in this space didn’t really know what to make of ‘The Voice,’ where it sat with the other competition shows, thought they knew, didn’t want to sit in the cattle call, but what happened was the level of talent in Season 1 was so high… when [we] went in early for Season 2…. working musicians … maybe [people] signed to a small label, people who really want to make it, who never would have stood in line for any other show came out,” he said. “Whatever you thought of Season 1, this [new talent crop] is way, way, way higher.”<br /><br />“The Voice” premieres February 5, after the Super Bowl on NBC.<br /><br />And when it does, the four celebrity coaches — Christina, Blake Shelton, Adam Levine and Cee Lo Green — will have eight new superstar friends helping them out. The first was when the coaches opened the premiere by actually, you know, singing, showing they walked the walk. And the second was the blind audition of one contestant in particular. The kind of larger-than-life singer who doesn't fit the sweet ingénue mold the label executives love so well. Someone who'd likely never even been given a chance to be heard in an industry of surgically-enhanced Barbie dolls with her extensive tattoos, and her shaved head, and her blatant disregard for playing by the rules.<br /><br />If you are a fan of "The Voice," you know exactly who I'm talking about. If not, then I suggest you get to know the force of nature that is Beverly McClellan. Like...now.<br /><br />McClellan and I intersected on a phone call where I was on the tail end of an all-nighter and she was just waking up and getting her caffeine on after a last-minute gig the previous night opening for none other than Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Which, despite getting the call only a few hours beforehand, seemed to have gone very smoothly.<br /><br />"The guy is amazing, and his crowd really received me well, so I was very happy. Very, very happy," she said. "I mean, I walked out there and they raised the curtain and I was standing out there by myself and there were tons of people and I was like 'Hey, how y'all doin'?' And I could see a lot of their faces go 'Hey, man, I remember her from...' And I just said 'Yep, I'm from 'The Voice.'"<br /><br />Although she performed for a sizable studio audience on Season 1 of "The Voice," not to mention literally millions of TV viewers, McClellan didn't think her nerves for last night's show were out of the ordinary. And in fact, a natural side effect of the rush of performing, and doing the thing she loves -- something that hasn't become even remotely old-hat.<br /><br />"I mean, is a roller coaster exciting every time you ride it? Yes, it is. So is the stage. So is people. So is life."<br /><br />Life after "The Voice" has consisted pretty much of touring. Then more touring. And, oh yes...touring.<br /><br />And, of course, recording her new CD, the appropriately titled "Fear Nothing." It was the first time she was able to sit down and record an album straight through, without having to stop and earn more money to work in the studio in bits and pieces. Not to mention having seasoned studio musicians and a great producer to work with for the first time, making this different from any of her previous CDs.<br /><br />"I think the actual players and David Z., who worked with Prince and Etta James -- c'mon, just those two names changed the whole process right there, man. That's better than me saving up my Ps and Qs that I don't have to use for the electric bill and taking it down to the studio and trying to put up maybe another two songs and wondering when I can release this...it's like, a whole different level."<br /><br />And speaking of James, if McClellan could only sing with one person in the world, she would pick James or Dolly Parton. Little did she know she wasn't the only one in the room at her audition who shared a great love of the blues legend.<br /><br />"When (Christina Aguilera) and Adam (Levine) turned around, I thought, if anybody has anything to teach me, it's going to be Christina. I did the right thing -- I found out we had Etta James in common, so that made me very happy. And that's something we didn't know when she turned around."<br /><br />Aguilera was obviously a fan of McClellan, as well, who ended up being the singer representing her team in the finals. If McClellan had to sum up her feelings about the musical diva in one sentence, she has no problem hitting in on the head.<br /><br />"She's lipstick on fire is what she is," McClellan laughs. "With perfect pitch."<br /><br />And speaking of fire, if there was one thing she could have done differently on "The Voice," she can tell you exactly what it would have been, without the slightest hesitation.<br /><br /><a name='more'></a>"I might have set the piano on fire. I asked them to do that but they said no. It was one of four in the world, so instead I laid on it. They told me not to do that, too. But hey, it's live television, what are you gonna do? Don't tell me not to do something, cause that's the first thing I'm gonna do."<br /><br />As fearless as McClellan is, wasn't there at least a sliver of doubt or worry about how she would be received as she was waiting for her blind audition?<br /><br />"Hell, no. Cause I don't give a [expletive] whether they accept me or not. I've done walked around in this skin for 42 years so I don't give a flyin' pazzizi what they think about me. They don't pay my bills, I do. I think it helped me with my music because I was like screw it, I am who I am. If you don't like me, oh well. I got nothing to lose, I'll go home and pet my dog, he loves me just fine."<br /><br />Apparently, her dog isn't the only one who loves her -- viewers voted McClellan into the semi-finals and the finals, proving that the exception to the rule can gain a widespread audience. And proving sexuality really doesn't matter, as it was never even an issue on "The Voice," unlike some other music contests.<br /><br />Of course, in a perfect world, it wouldn't even be mentioned, but it bears noting that three of the eight semi-finalists on the show were openly gay, indicating that perhaps Americans weren't quite as concerned about such irrelevant facts as some politicians would make you believe.<br /><br />"I was a singer way before I was gay. I knew what music was at three years old, but I didn't knew what that other was. You don't discover that till later in life. I love it when people say how is it to be a gay singer...I didn't set out to be that but I just am. But it's okay, the Indigo Girls get it, too. And I'm sure Melissa Etheridge does, too."<br /><br />As McClellan was covering one of Etheridge's songs on an episode of "The Voice," it occurred to me maybe she was borrowing her trademark shaved head from one of her inspiration's looks. As to which did it first, I should have known the answer.<br /><br />"I did. Hers was cancer-related. Mine's just crazy. "<br /><br />She may be a little crazy, but McClellan has used her new-found notoriety to start her own label and go the DIY approach. But unlike most do-it-yourself musicians, she also has the backing of the prestigious William Morris Talent Agency, creating a "best of both worlds" situation any artist would envy.<br /><br />So how does she plan to wield her creative power?<br /><br />"I'm gonna make the world sing the blues. That's it. I'm gonna conquer it. You know, they don't have to give me a genre. Love will find its way out cause music is universal."<br /><br />The next season of "The Voice" debuts Feb. 5 after Super Bowl XLVI and will air Mondays for the rest of the season. This time, each coach will start with 12 instead of eight contestants, so expect more songs, more laughs, more tears and more drama.
